From evidence generation to implementation in real-world health systems

My work spans occupational and environmental health, health-system implementation, programme evaluation, community health, and knowledge translation.

Across these settings, I am particularly interested in how evidence moves from measurement and evaluation to implementation and sustained practice, especially when health systems differ in resources, infrastructure, workforce capacity, and organisational context.

Current focus: occupational exposure prevention, safer cancer care, and implementation research.

Current Research

Hazardous Drug Exposure Prevention Program

Occupational & Environmental Health

I currently manage the Hazardous Drug Exposure Prevention Program (HazDEPP), a multi-site research programme assessing occupational exposure to hazardous antineoplastic drugs across healthcare settings in British Columbia.

Questions this work is leading me toward

  • How can environmental surveillance data be translated into meaningful changes in workplace practice?
  • What organisational factors influence whether safer practices are adopted and sustained?
  • How do knowledge, attitudes, perceived risk, and workplace conditions interact with practice?
  • Which components of hazardous-drug safety interventions are essential, and which can be adapted to different healthcare contexts?

Alongside HazDEPP, my work has included development of an online data dashboard for early-childhood learning needs assessment and support for research planning, proposals, budgets, agreements, and engagement with government and funding partners.

Research Interests

Occupational & Environmental Health

Workplace exposures, environmental contamination, occupational risk prevention, and safer working environments.

Implementation Research

Understanding how evidence, interventions, and guidelines are adopted, adapted, implemented, and sustained in real-world settings, including the influence of behaviour, organisational context, and health-system capacity.

Safer Cancer Care

Improving occupational and patient safety across cancer-care pathways, with particular interest in hazardous-drug exposure prevention and the implementation of safety standards across diverse healthcare environments.

Health Systems Evaluation & Evidence Translation

Evaluating programmes, services, and system responses and translating findings into practical recommendations for policy, organisations, and decision-makers.

Community & Population Health

Community-based prevention, health promotion, disease-risk communication, and social and behavioural approaches to improving population health.

Selected Research & Implementation Experience

Malaria Elimination and Health-System Implementation

Cambodia

Working with Cambodia’s national malaria programme, I supported national malaria-elimination and case-management priorities alongside government and international partners.

My work included contributions to national treatment guidance, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, programme coordination, implementation monitoring, and strategies involving community health workers. I also coordinated the Partnership for Vivax Elimination across national and international stakeholders.

This experience strengthened my interest in how evidence-based policies are implemented through complex health systems and how national guidance translates into practice at programme and community levels.

Health-System Research and Programme Evaluation

India

My research and evaluation work covered public health, reproductive health, women’s health, mental health, health-system preparedness, disease elimination, and programme learning.

The work included systematic evidence reviews, research design, programme-data interpretation, evaluation, questionnaire development, policy and research writing, and communication of findings for programme and policy audiences.

Earlier, I supported monitoring and evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition programmes, including data-quality systems, pilot studies, questionnaire development, capacity building, and use of programme data for implementation decisions.

Emerging Research Agenda

Adapting evidence-based safety practices across different health-system contexts

My emerging research interest focuses on implementation and adaptation of safer cancer-care practices across health systems with different levels of resources and infrastructure.

Many occupational and cancer-care safety recommendations are developed within relatively well-resourced health systems. Their underlying safety principles may be broadly relevant, but the way those recommendations are implemented may not be equally feasible across settings.

I am interested in questions such as:

  • Which components of cancer-care and hazardous-drug safety standards represent core safety requirements that should remain unchanged?
  • Which components can be adapted to local context without compromising safety?
  • How do infrastructure, workforce capacity, availability of engineering controls, monitoring systems, organisational culture, and resources influence implementation?
  • What implementation strategies are feasible in settings where ideal infrastructure or technologies may not be available?
  • How can adaptation be evaluated to determine whether it remains both effective and sustainable?

Ultimately, I am interested in developing research that helps health systems move from:

Guideline → Contextual adaptation → Implementation → Evaluation → Sustainable practice
